Christmas Concert

First years participated in the finals of the Got to Dance Competition on Thursday 22nd December. Special Guest Judges included Simon Cowell, Cheryl Cole, and Michelle Scherzinger, who flew in especially for the event.
Afterwards students were treated a muscial performance which included A Christmas Carol, and Frozen. This was followed by a selection of solo singers who were accompanied by the guitar and the ukulele.
Congratulations to everybody for taking part in the festivities. Have a wonderful Christmas break. We look forward to seeing you in the new year.

NCC Choir Visits Craddockstown House

Students from NCC visited the local Nursing Home in Craddockstown today to play the Ukulele and sing Christmas Carols. Residents and students alike enjoyed the performance and a great day was had by all.

Maths Counts Conference 3rd & 4th March 2017

Teachers from Naas Community College collaborated with teachers from Holy Family Community School and St Farnan's Post Primary School to plan and implement a Structured Problem Solving lesson on the topic of Geometry. Thank you to the students from NCC who participated in the Lesson Study.
Teachers from the Maths Department in NCC are looking forward to attending the Maths Counts Conference in March 2017 in Maynooth University to observe other teachers involved in Lesson Study teach live Research Lessons, connect with the Maths Development Team, attend presentations by the Maths Inspectorate, and participate in Problem Solving Workshops.

Digital School Champion Programme Training

Digital School Champions Training took place in The Carlton Hotel Dublin Airport on 12th December. Four students from NCC along with students from 66 other schools attend the training day which included workshops on MoJo (Mobile Journalism) with Eleanor Mannion from RTE, Web Design with Steve Holmes, Coding and App Development with Neil Keane from LERO, and Video Editing with Michael McNamara & Sinead O'Sullivan from PDST. The NCC Digital School Champions will participate in a nationwide competition taking place in April 2017.

2nd Year Yew CSPE Action Project

Yew 2 have been working on our CSPE Action Project, The Shoebox Appeal, over the past few weeks. First we organised our groups - for example, we are The Media Committee; we took pictures and organised everything to do with media. There was also the Collection Committee who collected and checked the shoeboxes coming up to the closing date.

To get help with our project we decided to call “Team Hope”, the organisers of the large-scale project and they sent us leaflets and links to helpful resources and they also collected the boxes from our school. We also did a presentation in every class throughout our school to explain what the Shoebox Appeal is and quickly we began receiving many boxes.

Over the few weeks we had, we decided to create a tuck-shop, where students could purchase small items for their shoeboxes, at a low price. We posted many notifications on Schoology about the tuck-shop and we also created posters and leaflets, which caught many students' attention. In the end we received seventy shoeboxes—which we made a wall from!

We are very appreciative and thankful for everyone's support with our Action Project and a big thanks to our teacher Ms. Brennan for helping us to organise it.

Transition Year Ballot

This was the total number of votes received in the school by the closing date of 09/12/16 at 12 noon.
Votes in favour total 82% of the valid poll, therefore Transition Year will go ahead in September 2018.

Green Schools and Neat Streets Committee

Our Green Schools and Neat Streets committee are doing fantastic work in the area of wasre reduction in the schools. Lots of plans in progress. Watch this space!

MAths Department Inspection

Ms Linda Ramsbottom, an inspector from the Department of Education & Skills visited Naas Community College on 5th and 6th December. During her time here Ms Ramsbottom inspected two First Year Maths Classes and Two Second Year Maths Classes. The Maths Subject Inspection Report will be posted to our website in the new year.

1st Year Futsul Tournament Report

Kildare Community School hosted a futsul tournament for the Kildare region on Wednesday the 16th November. A first year squad was selected and travelled over to Kildare Town for the day to represent Naas CC.

The players were put into a group with Confey College, One out of two Pipers Hill Teams and St Paul's from Monestervein.

We played St Paul's first where the result ended in a 2-1 win. Wahris Ayinde scored the first goal with a fine shot from outside the keepers area. The second goal came from Wahris again picking up the ball from a hard fought tackle from an opposition player where he assisted a goal from Mazin Ahmed who slotted home from an acute angle in a neat far corner shot. Oliver Lahtinen-Kalsi put in a solid display in goals preventing many shots from going in. Excellent performance from Ibrahim Babiker who was very strong in a defensive position and read the play well to keep the opponents out.

Our second group game came against a strong Piper's Hill Squad which ended in a 1-0 victory. Alex Donnelly Swift had an excellent game in this fixture controlling the play around him with some excellent footwork. Piper's Hill had some shots which were very close with some chances hitting the posts. Sam Flynn Scored the last minute winner with a well struck shot which the keeper couldn't keep out as he lay on the ground watching the ball go over the line after getting fingertips to it.

Our last group game was against Confey College ended our group games with another win with a 6-0 score line. The first goal came from a Sam chip which ended up with Wahris scoring a header in the first minute of time. Sam scored the second goal from a wide right position as he slotted in accurately into the far left post from a long range. The same two scored again. Wahris got on the scoresheet again from a goal from a right sided position while Sam scored a near replica goal to his last from a wide right position again. The next two goals came from a pair that complimented each other. Sean Joyce provided the assists for the next two goals while Kevin Reilly converted the goals across goal. Sean's assists showed tremendous skill and quick thinking to set up the goals. His first was a drag back and a back heel into the path of Kevin Reilly while his second consisted of a so called flick-flap past an opponent and again placed in the path of Kevin. Some excellent skills were displayed by all in this game.

Our merited performances led the team into the final where they played against the 2nd of the two Piper's Hill squads. With the team's confidence high, and a team talk to get them going, they headed into their final game. It was an excellent performance by both teams. Piper's hill broke the deadlock in the 8th minute with two quick and well taken shots in our half. Wahris created a goal with 2 minutes left in the game. Sam took an excellent shot which the keeper saved and the 12 minute match was over.

An exciting experience for the boys where they represented our school to a high level during the competition. Excellent footwork, goals and teamwork from all who stepped on the playing field. Well done to them all and look forward to a promising league campaign after Christmas.
